The Schizophrenia Society of Nova Scotia has
an annual walk as part of the National and Provincial Campaign
to reduce stigma and create awareness about Schizophrenia.
Having participated in the
Walk Lunenburg County 10,000 Step Challenge last November, our
local chapter was motivated to walk the equivalent of the
circumference of Nova Scotia, 10,400 kilometers beginning
November 1, 2006. We hope to reach our goal in 6 month’s
time walking in the Parkview Education Centre’s 5K Field of Dreams on Sunday, May 6th, 2007
to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week in order to
emphasize the importance of exercise to both our physical and
mental well-being.
We hope to
encourage other members of the community to join us. Prizes
will be awarded to those individuals who raise the most pledges,
to the walkers who log the most steps/kilometers and a draw for
smaller prizes to recognize the efforts of all of those who
participate.
We will be
holding a raffle of donated items with the draw date coinciding
with the day of our final walk, Sunday, May 6th,
2007.
With the
proceeds of 2007’s Walk The World, we plan to offer a bursary to
a graduate of the Nova Scotia Community College’s Health Care
Worker Program and a graduate of Verge House – South Shore
Regional School Board’s Transition Program; donate copies of
Rays of Hope and The Schizophrenia Digest, a magazine
subscription to the Bridgewater Library; and donate a tree to
the Town of Bridgewater.
We will
continue to challenge and encourage our members i.e. registering
interested consumers in Walk Lunenburg County (October 2006) and
Field of Dreams (May 2007) and purchasing pedometers for each
consumer; registering consumers in programs of interest (art
classes, public speaking, etc.) and monthly meetings featuring
special guest speakers and activities.
We have an
extensive advertising campaign planned which includes posters;
advertising at other fundraisers eg. Annual Siberian Iris Sale
in April; our website
www.ssns.ca; radio and print media; and a Thank You ad in
the Bridgewater Bulletin, Lighthouse Log, The Progress and The
Chronicle Herald to acknowledge all of our sponsors. Tax
receipts will be issued upon request for prize or cash
donations.
